She was back. Keegan was back from visiting her mothers place and couldn't be more thrilled. She loves her mother however she always seems to want to change her. Why couldn't her mother just accept her the way she was? Keegan knew it was because she was so much like her father and that was the reason she left. Her mother was not country at all. She was a complete city woman at heart. Keegan wondered even how her mother ended up with her father in the first place but she never really asked. Frankly she didn't really care. Her mother was not exactly the woman she imagined her father with or even being a mother in the first place. But what could she do? Nothing. She was stuck for life.
She would have to put up with her mother being the way she was for the rest of her life. They were stuck with each other. Keegan knew her mother would never change, and everytime she would go see her she would be the same. This was the reason she always tried to stay with her father. They were so alike compared to her and her mother. Keegan was such a tomboy. She loves helping her father out on the family ranch and doing whatever is needed. She helps farm, helps with the animals, fixing things to the best of her ability and she loves to ride horses. It was her favorite past time. Sometimes her and her father would go out all day on a horse ride and wouldn't come in until dark. She loved it. She never wanted to change her life. That is until she puts up with her mother for two weeks. Keegan just wants to go back to be with her father and the ranch. She hates the city.
Finally it was time to go back home with her father. Her plane got in and she took a cab to the small town outside of the city. They dropped her off in town and she made her way to the local stables. She would have to wait for her father or someone from the ranch to come get her so she would spend her time with her horse that was at the stables. Maybell was her favorite horse. She was a grey thoroughbred/quarter horse. They just had that special connection. Next week, Keegan would began a camp for younger kids and had the privaledge of helping them ride. She wanted Maybell to be there with her to be her trusty right hand horse.
Keegan walked into the barn feeling a little out of place. She was still wearing the stupid clothes her mother bought for her. She felt so awkward and hoped no one saw her. She just wanted to get home and change into something comfortable. However, right now her mind was shifting from the clothing to the mare standing in the stall infront of her. Keegan's smile grew large as she saw the grey mare standing there with her head out over the stall door, nickering loudly and tossing her head, excited to see Keegan. "Well I'm excited to see you too baby girl." A slight giggle in her tone. The mare always brightened up her day. She walked up to the mare and began to stroke her neck. "You been a good girl while I been gone?" The mare snorted softly and nickered, rubbing up against Keegan. "Yeah, I don't like these either." She leaned up and kissed the mare on her muzzle. Keegan leaned up against the stall and pat the mares neck. The young girl was so happy to be back where everything was so familiar. She looked around and wondered where everyone was, however, she was delighted no one was around to see her. Yet.

He'd called dozens of people from up to 6 hours away and had even gone to look at a couple of the closer ones, just in case. Yet he'd still turned up empty handed. Then he was at the local tack shop and saw an ad for a horse that instantly stood out to him. It was a cute little bay and white overo mare. Young enough to have many years left in her, but old enough to be reliable for his younger siblings. It was only a stroke of luck that the horse was temporarily boarded at the local stable, where it was being used as a lesson pony for summer camps until it sold.
He'd called the stable and set up a time to go out and look. His little sister had begged to go with him, but he'd decided it would be better if he went alone. Kids always fell in love with the first horse they saw, whether it was the right horse for them or not. Then the owner would know they had you hooked, and they wouldn't ever budge on the price. If he went alone, he could play down his interest, while still giving it a through test ride before even letting his sister go look.
It was sunny outside when he pulled into the gravel parking lot and shut off his truck engine. There was only one other vehicle in the parking lot, but he was about 5 minutes early. He decided to go in and see if it was the person he was looking for, and if wasn't, he could try to find the horse and get a first glimpse.
Ethan strolled into the barn, whistling softly to himself. He tested the office door, but it was locked. He then turned and walked down the aisle, poking his head into the feed room and tack room. No one. He knew his way around, since he'd been there many times in his life. He wasn't a regular, and he'd never boarded there, but he'd shown there and even taken a few lessons.
He made his way down the aisle, glancing at the horses in the stalls, looking for the unmistakable mare. None of the horses oon the aisle fit the bill. So he turned down the small alleyway that connected to another aisle of stalls. As he did, he heard a feminine voice talking, apparently to herself. He quickened his stride, cowboy boots beating out a steady rhythm on the floor.
As he came toward the stall she was in, he realized it was a girl close to his own age, clearly not the barn owner. He scuffed his toe on the floor and looked down. "Uh, sorry to intrude. I'm just here to look at a horse that's for sale," he said apologetically. He studied the girl, noticing that she looked familiar, but he couldn't put a finger on her name. She also looked very out of place in a barn, dressed in a dress with her hair done nicely and enough makeup that it was noticeable. Wondering more about her, he nodded at the horse she had been talking to. "Is this your horse? She's quite pretty." He gave the girl an encouraging smile, hoping she didn't mind talking to him. If she was too busy, she could easily tell him to go and he would.

Keegan began to wonder if maybe she should call her father and see how long he was going to be. She wasn't really wanting to stay in town dressed like this. One reason being no one had ever seen her this dressed up and cleaned up before. It made her a little self concious as she wasn't used to how she looked. She herself didn't think she looked good in this get up at all but she did it to get her mother off her case, to maybe make her proud of her finally. However she knew that her mother would always be disapointed in her daughter as she was like her father. Keegan had a feeling her mother would never really love her the way a mother did love a daughter. It in a way made the young girl sad but then again, why should she have to change just for her mother to love her. She was her mother for God's sake.
Being back in the small town where she was born made Keegan very happy. And now while she waited for her father or someone to come get her, she stood with her favorite mare, Maybell. The young mare really was pretty. She was one of the prettiest that Keegan owned. The two worked well together when she rode the mare and they were very fun to watch. Just thinking about that made Keegan want to go for a ride. However, there was no way that she was getting on any horse in what she was wearing. Damn. Well she could go change but she was pretty tired and just wanted to relax and see her father. She missed him so much and couldn't wait to see the aging man.
As she was debating on her next move, Maybell moved her attention to the sound moving along the aisle, boots slapping against the floor. Keegan didn't look, she just hoped it wasn't anyone she knew. She closed her eyes and then opened them slowly and moved around Maybell's head to get a look at the girl who was now appologizing. "Uh, sorry to intrude. I'm just here to look at a horse that's for sale." Oh, that was one of her favorite things. Looking at horses and trying to find a good one to buy. She loved horse shopping. When other girls were going shopping for shoes, she was shopping for horses. When Keegan looked at the guy again, this time with a little more focus, she realized it was Ethan. Oh my god. Oh please don't recognize me. Her cheeks were beginning to burn and turn red as she couldn't believe he was here. "Is this your horse? She's quite pretty." Maybell realized he was looking at her and nickered and tried reaching out for him. "Yeah. This is Maybell." She looked at the mare and patted her. "She steals all the attention." Right as she said it, Keegan realized it probably sounded wierd. Hoping he didn't notice, she shifted her weight and stole a glance to Maybell. She wasn't sure if she should 'introdue' herself or not.

He didn't notice that his hands still a little dirt on them, evidence of his day so far. "Maybell huh? Pretty name for a pretty horse." He was surprised to feel a little more at ease after the girl had talked. Maybe it was the fact that her voice seemed slightly nervous too. Or maybe it was the fact that he was finally getting used to being around girls. Nah, he'd never get used to being around girls.
He laughed at her next comment, though he found himself wondering if she wished he'd called her pretty instead of the horse. The truth was, she was pretty. Very pretty. But he wasn't the kind of to just walk up to a girl and start sweet-talking about her looks. If it didn't get him in trouble first, it would just make him look like an egotistical jerk. Which he wasn't. Still, he decided to recover his apparent mistake. "Didn't mean to exclude you. I guess it's just easier to introduce yourself to a horse than a person. See how easy she accepted me petting her? How many people do you that are so friendly?"
Ethan smiled, and then brushed his clammy palm off against his jeans before reaching out and offering her a handshake. "How about a proper in-ter-duction? I'm Ethan." He spoke casually, waiting for her to respond with her name. He never paid much attention to the popular girls at school. He wasn't dumb enough to think any of them were in his league. This girl looked like she might be one of them, but something seemed a little off. Then again, showing up to a horse barn in a dress seemed exactly the sort of thing a girl like that might do. What was he getting himself into, talking to a girl like that? It wasn't like they could ever be friends or anything.

Keegan wasn't one that was normally shy or whatnot, however, when she was wearing something that made her feel out of her element it would make her appear as such. She got her attitude from her father. He was a very big people person and didn't care who it was he would talk to them no matter what. Keegan probably would have been more socialable if the person who had found her out of her element wasn't the one, Ethan Ott. He was the one person she hoped wouldn't see her like this and what did fate bring, him.
It didn't suprise Keegan at all that Maybell was trying for the young man's attention. She loved it. And she smiled as Ethan reached out so the mare could sniff him and he scratched her muzzle. He was good with horses and that was another thing that made her attracted to him. "Maybell huh? Pretty name for a pretty horse." Aw he was so adorable. Keegan giggled a little and nodded her head. "Yeah, my grandma named her. I think it suits her well." Her nerves were starting to go away as she spoke to him. She tried not to think of how she looked.
However, the nerves were back again as he laughed at what she said. Nice job Keegan, make a fool out of yourself again. Her eyes fell to the floor as he laughed a little and then she looked up at him again, right into his eyes. She listened as he spoke agian. "Didn't mean to exclude you. I guess it's jsut easier to introduce yourself to a horse then a person. See how easy she accepted me petting her? How many people do you know that are so friendly?" She let herself smile and laugh. He was right. It was easier to talk to a horse. They didn't care what you said they always listened. "Ha, yeah I guess you're right." Shifting her weight she changing positions as she stood there. Damn shoes were uncomfortable, just like everything else.
She stood there and then straightened up as the boy held out a hand to her and began introducing himself. She took his rough hand into hers and held it in a firm handshake. "How abotu a proper in-ter-duction? I'm Ethan." In a way, Keegan didn't want t let go but she knew she had to. Quickly before letting her hand go, she told him who she was and then waited for whatever response he would give her. She knew he knew her but it had been a while since they saw each other. It was kinda funny that he didn't realize it was her yet. "I'm Keegan." So they were properly introduced now. She wondered if they would ever talk again after this. She wanted to so bad but a guy like that didn't talk to tomboys like her. She was just another one of the guys to most. She normally never looked like this.

Keegan? Keegan Harlow? He almost voiced the words, but he didn't. He hoped the shock he felt wasn't apparent on his face. The last time he'd seen Keegan was...in a class the fall before. They'd talked a few times, but they weren't all that close. What really got him was that at school she'd always seemed like a tomboy, a girl who didn't care about her looks. The image she presented here was much different.
He laughed, realizing his own mistake in not recognizing her at first. "Sorry Keegan, I shouldda known it was you. But I guess I haven't really talked to you for almost a year." It wasn't that he wouldn't have wanted to talk to her, but he never really talked to girls much. He knew she was nice, but he'd never made a point to try to get to know her outside of school. Despite being a tomboy, she had always been kind of cute, and he figured she probably had plenty of guys interested in her. Enough that she wouldn't care about a guy like him.
He glanced around, wondering when the barn owner was going to show up. He wasn't sure if he was interrupting Keegan or not, and wanted to let her get back to whatever she'd been doing when he came. "Do you know what stall the paint mare for sale is in? If you just point me to her, I'll let you get back to your horse," he smiled apologetically as he spoke.

Keegan was in a way worried about what the young man would say. She had seen him around school and had always had a huge crush on him however she wasn't a girl to just go up to a guy and talk or ask him out. Just the look on Ethan's face made her wonder what was going on in his mind. His eyebrow lifted but Keegan couldn't tell if it was in a bad or good way, if there even was a 'way'. Did he remember who she was? Or did the name not ring a bell? He looked literally shocked. In a way it made her somewhat happy that she could make him shocked but then again she wasn't sure what to do now.
Keegan smiled as he seemed to realize what he did. "Sorry Keegan, I shouldda known it was you. But I guess I haven't really talked to you for almost a year." She then realized that it really had been such a long time since they had said a word nor seen each other. It was wierd. She didn't think it had been that long. She had always stayed off in the distance and always wanted to talk to Ethan but was scared. She was used to talking to guys, but not guys she had a crush on. At this moment, the awkwardness wasn't as strong anymore but she still felt vulnerable. She was suprised they were having such a normal conversation.
She saw Ethan glance around and that made her look around as well and then letting her eyes land on him again. She reminded herself that he was here to look at a horse to buy. She tired to remember on what he said the horse looked like. "Do you know what stall the paint mare for sale is in? If you just point me to her, I'll let you get back to your horse." She thought for a moment, "You are actually pretty close. She is down at the end of the aisle. She is a beauty for sure." And then she chuckled, "You don't have to leave Ethan. I was enjoying your company." It was the truth and her cheeks grew pink and warm again as she was embarressed for what she said.
