Riley slowly woke up, vaguely thinking she was up late. When the thought finally came closer to her consciousness, her eyes flew open and she looked at the clock. As soon as she realized the date, she groaned. She didn't have school today. She had been planning on sleeping in for once, but now that she had scared herself out of a day's rest, she knew she wasn't going to get back to sleep.
She pulled herself out of bed, nearly tripping over Bear. The dog typically slept in her bed, but with the rising temperatures he just as often slept on the floor away from her body heat. Thanks, I needed that. she whispered to the dog, who had merely lifted his head and glared at her for her offense, then went back to sleep. She opened a couple drawers, having to locate wherever she last put her running shorts and her sweat-wicking tank top. And her sports bra. That one she found on the back of her chair.
She dressed herself, and padded to the bathroom for a hair thing. She blindly put her hair in a pony tail, not really caring how she looked. If anyone else was up at this insane hour, they deserved to see her in her messy glory. She went down the stairs, finding her shoes in the living room. What had she done in the living room that she took them off in there? She tried to figure it out as she put them on, but was no closer to finding that answer when she was done than when she started. She grabbed Bear's leash, and a soft shake of it had him bounding down the stairs.
Shh, Beary boy. No one else is up. He sat politely for his leash, and she clipped it to his collar. Before she left, she backtracked to the kitchen. She wrote a note telling her parents where she'd be, on the off chance they'd get up or that she would be running long enough that she would still be gone when they got up.
Bear was doing his huffy bark, letting her know if they didn't get out soon, he would start his full blown yapping. I'm hurrying, I'm hurrying. she told him quietly. She gently opened and closed the door, setting out at a quick run. She had built up her endurance over the school year, and she was determined to keep it over the summer, even if it meant getting up before the sun to have enough time before it got hot. It seemed like only minutes had passed when the sun started to show its face. She was running east, because if the sun was coming up, she liked to watch it without having to stop. She looked down at her wrist and realized she had forgotten her watch. She groaned, and Bear answered her with a bark.
Yeah, yeah, dear, you aren't used to running as much with me. Her morning runs were typically fairly short while she was doing track or soccer, so Bear hadn't built up the endurance she had. Without further ado, she looked to her left. She was startled to see unfamiliar surroundings. She had run far longer than she thought, and was pretty far down the road she lived on. She didn't know who owned the land, but knew they wouldn't mind her sitting on the edge of it. She plopped down on the grass beside the road, and pulled her Miniature Pinscher into her lap. He sat obediently, disliking to get his feet wet in the dewy grass. He much better liked to sit on her lap while her butt soaked. She petted him a little, watching the sunrise as she let the little dog catch his breath.

Wesley Allen Hess Yeah I’ve done some pretty stupid things but hey I’m a little bit harder and A whole lot smarter That’s how I got to be this way
[/blockquote] Damn what a night, tossing and turning never able to fall into a deep sleep. It was bothering him something terrible and he was getting frustrated quick. Finally his tossing landed him on his back and his slate blue eyes stared at the ceiling. Watching the wall for a moment he laid there letting his thoughts drift to anything that came to mind. He was lucky that he didn't have work or classes this morning. Glancing to his clock he groaned. It was 4:30 in the morning and he wasn't much of a morning person, but sleep just wasn't reaching his body tonight and he was sick of just laying here and trying to sleep. Suddenly he sat up rubbing his hand through his reddish brown hair and sighing as he looked to the two dogs on the floor. The one was watching him, but staying still not wanting the wake the other one which was a new puppy in the household. He somewhat smiled looking at the little pup before quietly getting up and going to the bathroom. Washing his face and brushing his teeth he woke himself up fully. Then when he got back in the room he changed into a muscle shirt and jeans and threw on his boots. Glancing over to the dogs he saw that the pup was slowly waking up. "Come on time to go out," he said and both dogs fallowed him outside. He let the two do their business in the back yard before letting them fallow him to the garage. He knew both dogs would go lay on the porch and sleep some more while he worked. The air was slightly chilled causing a faint layer of goosebumps to rise on his skin. He shook it off, turning on the light in the garage and grabbing his tools He then looked to the radio, flipped it on and turning the volume down a bit. Then he crawled under the truck and began to work. Time seemed to fly by and he grew content with working and fixing up his truck. It was his big time work in progress at the moment. His current working vehicle was a 2000 ford mustang that was dark green with two black stripes. It was a five speed and it was a beauty of a thing. He loved it, but he was more anxious to get his truck done. He liked setting up high and being in a much larger vehicle, it's just what he preferred. Everything seemed quiet and he was focused on the work at hand, that was until his older coonhound's howl surprised him and made him smack his head on the front axle of the truck. A string of cuss words rattled from his mouth and he crawled from under the truck and got up. Walking out of the garage he watched as his blue tick coonhound puppy went running towards the street. He fallowed his path to land on a girl and a much smaller dog. "Aw shit," he muttered and started running after the dog before he got himself hit. "Blue get back here," he called while his red tick coonhound (the older one) jumped off the porch and fallowed his master and the puppy. When the puppy stopped at the girl he was able to cetch up and snatched the pup in his arms. "Sorry about that he just ain't obedient yet," he said not sure how the girls dog would react towards another.

Bear leaped up and started barking, and Riley looked to her left. Apparently the owner of the land she was trespassing on was up, and his two dogs had caught sight of Bear. She scooped up the Miniature Pinscher, standing so he couldn't bark directly at the other dogs. While he was a fairly harmless fellow, she knew that his bravado could easily get him killed. Stop it, she commanded him, and he quieted his barking, but didn't ultimately quit. It was about that time that the smaller, puppy like blue dog came up to her. Hey buddy. she said with a smile, not bending down to pet him like she typically would. Bear would probably think the dog was coming into her space and try to protect her, an admirable trait were he not roughly about a foot high.
It was about now she regretted just flinging her hair up and getting out to run. Her shirt had definite sweat patches, and it was quite obvious she'd been running. Her hair, besides being messily in a ponytail, had developed flyaways. Added to that, Bear still was acting like a Doberman Pinscher, not a Miniature. Shh! she told the small dog, and finally got him to stop barking. She smiled at the guy, wondering how he could look so handsome with a bit of what looked to be oil on his cheek and on his hands. He must have been working on a car or engine of some sort with his dogs out with him when they saw Bear. He does look a bit young. And it doesn't help that Bear here is probably egging him on in his own language. She rolled her eyes, but by now the MinPin looked as innocent as a dove. He was blinking up at the man, squinting slightly in the sun.
My name is Riley Grant, I live at least a couple miles west on this road. Do you own this land around here? She was fairly curious, considering he didn't look like he would be out of college yet. She was a rising freshman, and not looking forward to being a freshie once again. High school was bad enough, she didn't know how immature college kids could be.

[/blockquote] Wes smiled kindly at the girl as Dixie sat by his side, wagging her red ticked tail and looking at the two newcomers. She was quiet now since she didn't see them as a threat to her, the puppy, or her master. Wes nodded in a short reply to her. "Only six months and I haven't gotten much time to train him yet, he's gettin' the hang of being housebroken though,"
he said petting the wriggling puppy's head. He looked to the girls dog, knowing his breed, and how they were like and just smiled. "He's definitely got spunk to him," he said with an amused smile. He listened as she spoke again and nodded. Looking around his property for a moment. "I'm Wes Hess, and I guess you can consider it my land, I inherited it from my late grandfather," he replied. The chunk of land was nice with a small patch of trees around it and a large field behind it. He had a nice three door garage and a nice little two story house. It also has a small barn out back with a nice sized fence where you could see a horse. The driveway was stone and the grass was bright green. In the front of the house he had a hand carved, wooden eagle with the American flag and the confederate flag flying from it showing his southern pride and heritage. Looking back to the girl he could tell she had been running, her hair somewhat wind whipped and small sweat patches on her tank top. She was vary fit, lean with good looking legs, a kinda girl a man would drool over. Bending down he put the pup down by Dixie who was immediately checking the pup over to be sure he was alright. He himself was fit having those muscles that showed he was a hard working guy. Currently he was in UTI learning to be a diesel mechanic, though he knew a lot of the stuff already, he wanted to make a career out of it and possibly own his own garage. He looked back to Riley. "Your last name sounds somewhat familiar, have you lived around here all of your life or did you just recently move here," he asked. He was looking to start a conversation, she looked old enough to be in college and he was always up for making new friends around here. She grinned at the puppy he described, knowing all too well the training you had to give a puppy. Small dogs, typically terriers, tended to be stubborn and independent. Bear was no exception. It had taken him quite awhile to learn enough to be tolerable, and even longer to be lovable again. Sure, he was definitely cute as a puppy, but she wasn't sure she wanted to go through that again even for the cuteness. She laughed at his comment, knowing just how true his statement was. She was only glad her sister's dog was an amiable fellow and would put up with him.
She smiled. It's a nice place, from what I can tell. She scratched Bear's head as she looked around, taking in the house. It was a nice place, with plenty of yard. It was the kind of place she would want when she got married and had kids. Of course, she'd have a fence around the property, and a bigger dog than Bear. But then again, she wasn't this guy, and they probably had different views in life. Being fit was not one of those, apparently, because he looked pretty muscular himself. She was more lean than muscular, but you couldn't be competitive without being required to work out. Needless to say, she wasn't afraid of most guys, and her parents had never been worried about her going out with guys.
I've lived here all my life. she said with a smile. I'm not sure how long my family's been here, but this is where my roots are. She didn't add that she could have chosen a college somewhere else and been leaving at the end of the summer because she had already chosen the local college. Avery could have gone anywhere, but the twins stuck together. And it sure was a good thing for Riley's grades. Avery was the smart one, and if it wasn't for her Riley might not have even gotten into the college in town. But their relationship went deeper than that, and Riley believed Avery was the only one who actually understood her.
